I, Nimra Khan, am an Early Childhood Education student, who got the opportunity to work with children in a Kindergarten setting. By getting the chance to observe children and interact with them, I learned a great deal about how important appreciative inquiry is. It taught me to be objective and open-minded, and how crucial it is to acknowledge and appreciate that each child is unique in its own way. Children are highly underestimated in their abilities and skills and it is important to recognize how intelligent they are in different ways by detailed observations and interactions. Unlike any other role, working with children requires you to be present at all times, because it is the spontaneous moments that occur that matter the most. Interacting with adults can leave such a great impact on a child, and this works both ways. In my setting, one thing that was undermined was how necessary it is to collaborate regularly with the families of children, which I will discuss further on in th is paper. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory describes the range of interacting influences that affect a developing child (Papalia†¦.pg 32). The contextual systems identified by him are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. Domestic violence within the Asian community in Auckland, New Zealand, is a very serious social epidemic and needs to be recognized as abusive and a crime. It is a variety of behaviors operated by partners, family members, or within other close relationships. It includes physical abuse, sexual abuse and psychological abuse, which includes harassment, bullying, threatening, and allowing or causing the child to see any of the abuse done to a person. It robs women of their human rights, it takes away the safety they had at home, and it can kill. Domestic violence is known as a â€Å"crime of silence† (Pillai 2001) and because of this, criminals don’t take full responsibility for their actions, and continue to perform violent acts. There are approximately 5% Asian immigrants and refugees in New Zealand, and of those, there are 80,000 women and children (Pil lai 2001). Asian communities look at domestic violence as normal, and a way to show dominance in the household. It is a sensation that is not talked about and even denied, because they think of it as a private matter. Domestic violence is not seen as abuse and it’s seen as common in marriages. The women are responsible for productively maintaining their relationships. If women go about their role as good wives, mothers, or daughters in law, then they won’t have any problems. Asians think that if a woman gets in trouble with her husband, it’s her fault because she is responsible. There are research studies that show that 90-97 percent of domestic abuse is performed against women by men (Pillai 2001). Women who are abused are sometimes scared to talk about their abuse and violence, or even report it, so there is silence around domestic violence in Asian communities in New Zealand. Some women don’t know where to look for help, and some are afraid to talk to the police or the law to help them. The violence women experience in domestic abuse can be life threatening, and even long term. The types of injuries women are exposed to are horrendous. Neoclassics And Romantics Neoclassical, also known as, The Age of Reason and The Enlightenment was during 1660-1770. They exhibit strong tradition and ancient values from the classical writers of Rome and Greece. Who were thought to have achieved excellence in literary and ideas. Such as form, balance, discipline, restraint, unity, order and the use of tragedy, satire and epic. In their opinion, literature was a form of "Art", therefor must be perfected by long study, practice and attention to details. The purpose of literature was to instruct the use of reason over emotion. They prefer society to the individual and public life over private. There are four major emphases in this age, firstly, emphasis on decorum, conventions and defined codes of behavior. Secondly, emphasis on moderation, and thirdly, characters type, humans were primarily subject matter of literature, therefor poetry was mere imitation of humans life, and finally, neoclassic poetry emphasizes on general rather than particular. They had rigid class system, women had no voice and children were unimportant. Believed in divine order, a rational and moral universe, and in constant human nature, overall effort towards stability. While the Romantics, from 1798 until 1832, emphasized a number of ideas that were a reaction against the proceeding "Age of Reason". As Shelley stated, that the literature of the age "has arisen as it were from a new birth". They concentrated on innovation rather than traditionalism in their material, forms and style of literature, and introduced symbolism. Wordsworth was one of the key poets in that age; his poetry was about his own feelings, spontaneous and genuine rather than a mirror of men in action, therefor concentrating on inner self and life but not society.
